Midlife Style: How To Wear A Short Denim Skirt

The denim skirt has taken many forms over the past decades. Recently the long denim maxi skirt has skyrocketed in popularity. The long denim skirts do not reflect my personal style, but the shorter style is making a comeback this spring and summer! Just because you are over a certain age does not mean that you cannot wear a short denim skirt. We are not talking about micro minis here…just something above the knee. Let’s take a look at how to wear a shorter denim skirt, even if you are over 50 like I am.

Denim Skirt Style Tip:

Fit is key with a short denim skirt. We want to avoid anything too short, or too tight. Also distressing, lots of embellishments or acid wash is going to make you look less sophisticated, so avoid these details in a denim skirt.

For this outfit, I’m wearing the Free Assembly Denim Utility Mini Skirt. I shared it earlier in the spring. Unfortunately, it is currently sold out so I will link some similar styles.

I wanted this look to have a very casual, and comfortable vibe so I chose an oversized linen shirt. This can throw off the proportions if you’re not careful but I think tucking the shirt in loosely is the key to avoiding the frump factor.

My green striped shirt is from Aerie. If you order this, be sure to size down at least two sizes as they run very oversized. I’m wearing an XS, and it’s still very big. I also like the J. Crew Factory version so I linked them for you in several colors!

Finish off the outfit with your favorite sandals or sneakers. The fun thing about a denim skirt, is that like denim pants you can go in so many directions with it. Dress it up or down and the combinations are endless!

This A-line skirt is perfection in my opinion. So figure flattering and the length is just right. This one is from Nordstrom and is pricey, but wow if I could only pick one it would be this one!
