No matter what length hair you have, wearing hair accessories is always a fun way to display your personal style. While there are no right or wrong ways to use hair accessories in the general sense, I do think if we are middle aged we need to be careful when choosing which hair accessories to wear, because they can actually make us look older or too juvenile.

As always, I think you should wear whatever makes you feel good and your hairstyle is no different. My hair is longer now at age 54 than it has been in quite a few years. Some people say that women my age should not wear long hair…I say, that’s ridiculous!
Since I have had medium to long hair most my life, I can only recommend what works for me and these are the must-have hair accessories that I use regularly.
Hair Ties That Don’t Damage Hair
Hair accessories must be gentle on the hair. If you are over 50 or have color treated hair, you already know that our hair is more fragile. Opt for no pull hair ties like these to ensure no breakage or extra hair shedding. Silk scrunchies are great to sleep in at night.
Hair Pins (Plain & Decorative)

Hair pins are a must for my hair style preferences. I prefer to use them instead of barrettes to pin some hair back off my face, and they lay nice and flat. Using two bobby pins in an “x” shape will hold them in place. Then you can add a decorative hair pin over them if you want to add some style.
Claw Clips
Claw clips are a must-have hair accessory, but they are nothing new. If you don’t have the flat style then you are missing out! Why no one thought of this sooner is a mystery, but these are so much more comfortable than tradition hair clips.
I especially like them for driving because the clip lays flat and does not poke you in the head or dig into the headrest.
Heatless Curls
Heat styling is damaging to our hair, but especially if you are perimenopausal and have color treated hair. My hair started shedding excessively last year, so I adopted a whole new haircare routine. You can read all about it here.

If you like to wear your hair curly, then you might want to try these heatless hair curlers. They look a little crazy, but I did try it and to my surprise it worked really well!
Headbands

Headbands have made a comeback in the past few years, and this is another hair accessory that can really be fun to experiment with. They can be worn with short or long hair, and come in so many styles. You can wear a bedazzled headband, or a very traditional, conservative one…whatever suits your personal style.

If you wear glasses or struggle with headbands causing pain behind your ears, then this style looks interesting. It’s currently in my shopping cart to try! It comes in several different colors.
Spiral Twist Hair Pins

If you like to wear a bun, then these spiral twist hair pins are a must. They are especially helpful if you have layered hair. You twist the pin into the hair and it secures it. It won’t fall out like a bobbie pin, so I love these for messy buns.
Decorative Pony Tail Holders

These are hair accessories that have endless style options. From very feminine to more streamline and modern, there are decorative pony tail holders for every possible look. I have included some of my personal favorites.
The only area of caution in my opinion is bows. Bows are trending, but when older women wear large bows in their hair, it can look unflattering. Instead, I try to find more flowy scarf-like hair accessories like these, instead of a full on bow.

Hats

Hats are a must-have hair accessory not only for style, but for sun protection. We need to protect our scalp, face, and hair color from the damaging effects of the sun. I recommend a wide brim straw hat for the summer months, and caps and visors for active wear.
My favorite type of ball cap has a hole for my ponytail. I wear these for pickleball, walking, and other outdoor occasions. I like the Lululemon hats, and I have also found several styles on Amazon.
As summer approaches, it’s not too early to stock up on hats. My all time favorite straw hat is the Brixton Joanna. It’s a little more expensive, but I’ve had mine for several years and it’s been well worth the money.
I’m very picky about my visors. Since I have a small face and head, they can’t be too big. The Lululemon Removable Sweatband All-Sport is my favorite visor and it comes in black or white. It also comes in two sizes, so pay attention if you purchase this one.
The other Lululemon visor that I like is the Fast Paced Wide Band Running Visor. It is available in some brighter colors.
Hair accessories are a fun way to accentuate your look, and are pretty inexpensive. They also help us to take better care of our hair with less heat styling and sun protection. I encourage you to experiment with some of these trends and see how you like them!
