8 Items That Are Out Of Style

As fall approaches, it’s time to evaluate our wardrobe and weed out the things that are no longer serving us well. Today I’m sharing 8 items that are out of style for 2023 and alternatives that will look more modern.

These types of posts are of course my opinion and if you want to wear these things, then by all means wear what you like. I’m just suggesting things that will be more on trend for 2023 and hopefully be more flattering. As women in midlife, I don’t want to look like I am 20, but I do want to look updated and relevant, and if you are following along here I’m guessing you do too.

So let’s get into the specific 8 items that are out of style for 2023 and what you can wear instead.

Capri Pants

I’ve said it before, and I will continue to say it….please don’t wear capri pants for any reason! I see them everyday, especially in the summer months and they don’t flatter a single person. Why? Mostly because of where they stop on the leg. They cut you off in the worst place making your legs look shorter. If you are petite this is a double whammy!

If you have thick ankles, capri pants will emphasize them. What is a better alternative? Wide leg or ankle length pants.

Wide leg linen pants are perfect for the end of summer and early fall. They are breezy and cool and are much more flattering for all body types.

If you want a shorter pant, opt for a cropped or ankle length style. It looks much for modern and on trend for 2023!

These are just a few examples of how to style wide leg or cropped style pants. So ditch the capris and try out a few of these instead!

T-Shirt Dresses

What? T-shirt dresses are out of style? Well, if you really want to look more modern consider an athletic style dress instead. I know t-shirt dresses are easy and comfortable, but they give you no shape and aren’t the most flattering.

An athletic/tennis style dress is much more in style, and they are comfortable and practical. I like these because they have built in shorts underneath so there is no worrying about a gust of wind catching your dress. I have been living in them this summer! Here are some of my favorites:

If you don’t like the athletic style dress, then consider a knit dress with a defined waist or something with ruching. Here are some examples. Be sure to click the right arrow in the widget to see all the items.

Paper Bag Pants

Back around 2019 the Paper Bag Waist Pants were everywhere. I had two pair…and they were top sellers here on the blog and on Amazon. This style was also popular in shorts.

Well, it’s time to say goodbye to this paper bag style in my opinion. Yes, you will still see them in the stores but that doesn’t mean they are the most on trend choice.

My suggestion for an alternative would just be a nice pair of wide leg pants. Whether you go for a wide leg dress pant or a more casual style you can’t go wrong with the wide leg style.

Denim Mini Skirts

Okay, this one may be the most surprising. The denim mini has been replaced with the long straight denim skirt! I never thought I would see the day that this skirt was in style, but hear me out on this one.

This style skirt is tricky and must be worn the right way or you will look frumpy and old fashioned. For the most up to date look, you will want a straight skirt with a substantial slit. This will make it more stylish and easier to walk and move in. Also in most instances a shoe or boot with a heel looks best, but you can also wear a sneaker.

Animal Print

When it comes to animal print, I don’t think it will ever be completely out of style, but for me personally I’m really tired of it. I think you will see less of it for fall 2023 simply because it has been such a hot trend for the past few years.

If you love animal print and want to wear it, then go for the natural tones. Avoid the blue, pink or other unnatural animal print colors. For my personal wardrobe I’m not purchasing any new animal print this year.

Faux Fur Vests

Another item you might want to steer away from is the faux fur vest. These have had a moment over the past few years, but if you want to look more on trend for 2023 try a puffer vest instead. Puffer vests can add visual weight, so keep that in mind when styling these.

To avoid the marshmallow look, try a puffer vest with a fitted tee and leggings worn open. This way you can still maintain a shape. Puffer vests come in cropped and regular lengths so find the one that flatters your body type the most.

Branded Logo Tees & Sweatshirts

Tees and sweatshirts with branded logos are certainly not horrible fashion, but the trend for 2023 is less bold branding on the clothing . For example, this sweatshirt from Gap.

You may have heard the term “quiet luxury” recently. This is a term that describes a high end, elegant look without announcing to the world that you are wearing a luxury brand. This is the current trend.

Want to look more sophisticated…even in a sweatshirt or tee? Then go for styles that are plain or if you really prefer prints graphic tees are more fashionable than logo tees. Graphic tees with cities or bands are also on trend, although this is not my personal style.

The quarter-zip sweatshirt is a good option for 2023. I like this one from Amazon.

Cold Shoulder Tops

The last item on my list of 8 items that are out of style is the cold shoulder top. You probably already know this since they have been out of style for a while now, but just in case you are still wearing these it’s best to put them away for 2023. The photos above and below are from 2018.

What To Wear Instead Of The Cold Shoulder Top

Instead of the outdated cold shoulder top, consider a top with cutouts in other areas. If you’re like me and cutouts are not really your style, then you could wear a one shoulder or off the shoulder style instead.
