Revised May 2024
According to our calendar, fall officially starts in September but most of us shift into fall mode much earlier. Of course, I’m probably biased because I’m a lover of all things fall! August is when my brain switches gears to fall, and it’s still quite hot in most places…especially where I live in Georgia. So how do I transition into early fall outfits? Read on and I will share all my tips.
Wear Cool Dresses In A Fall Color Palette
I primarily wear dresses in the summer. I am much more comfortable in a dress than shorts, in fact on our last trip to Orlando, I didn’t even pack any shorts! Since the weather this time of year is still hot , I still wear a lot of dresses. The difference is that I gravitate toward a darker more fall-like color palette. I also tend to be bored of tropical prints, so I avoid those.
Wrap Style Maxi Dress
This is another early fall outfit that is really only “fall” because of the colors. A wrap style maxi dress in deep teal and orange are a beautiful combination for this time of year.
Maxi Dress
A maxi dress is perfect for early fall. They are cool enough for warmer days, and give a little coverage for air conditioning or a cool evening. Choosing one in an Autumn hue tricks the eye into thinking this is a fall outfit.
This flutter sleeve maxi dress can also be layered with a denim jacket. The top is smocked and it features a tiered breezy skirt.

Try A Short Sleeve Or Sleeveless Sweater
Early fall outfits can also be built around a short sleeve sweater. Paired with denim, a skirt, or shorts, this can look very chic while still keeping you cool. There is just something about a knit sweater (even a summer one) that feels more like fall.

Pair A Long Sleeve Top With Shorts/Mini Skirt
There is something so interesting about the juxtaposition of wearing long sleeves with shorts. It’s a look that is fun to wear, and the possibilities are endless!
Wear An Athletic Skirt/Dress In Fall Color
Athletic skirts and dresses have never been more popular, and you don’t even have to be athletic to enjoy them! I enjoy pairing an athletic skort with a sweatshirt…even in the summer when I’m indoors.
Athletic separates in darker/fall colors are also a way to transition into early fall.
This early fall outfit features the Air Essentials line from Spanx paired with a denim jacket.
Fall colors can still be vibrant, like this bright red matching set by Crown & Ivy.
Even when the weather is still feeling like summer, you can use these tips to put together some fun early fall outfits. Remember to use color to make the overall look of the outfit feel more like fall, while sticking to lighter fabrics and breezy styles!
