How To Style The Perfect Sweater Dress Outfit For Any Occasion

The sweater dress is not only cozy and versatile, but it’s also a must-have for any fashion enthusiast looking to stay on-trend. You’re about to learn how to style the perfect sweater dress outfit and it’s easier than you might think!

Sweater dresses come in so many shapes and styles. Form fitting, oversized, long and short…there is something for every body type. There are so styling tips to keep in mind when wearing a sweater dress and we will go over those to help you pick the right sweater dress outfit for you.

Choose The Right Length

At 53, I am aware that many women my age do not want a dress that shows too much leg. I never like to impose fashion rules, especially when they are attached to a certain age; however we do need to be mindful of what is appropriate, and a sweater dress that is barely covering your backside is not going to do you any favors.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, a dress that is too long can often look frumpy and no woman wants that. The key is to find a dress that flatters your body and that requires a careful consideration of your height and build.

This is an example of a short sweater dress outfit that is a nice length for taller women. I’m 5’7″ and I have had to return so many sweater dresses over the years because they are too short for me.

Check out this post on what to do if your sweater dress is too short.

This mock turtle neck sweater dress hits just below mid thigh and has plenty of length in the back. Also, wearing a taller boot to cover some of the legs helps make the look a little more elegant. Notice that the dress is loose fitting without adding too much bulk to my frame.

This is an Amazon find for just under $40 and it comes is so many colors! I’m wearing the berry red in a size small.

Another style tip for sweater dresses is the sleeve detail. This one has lantern sleeves with knit detail making it very on trend for 2024.

Show Off Your Curves

If the more oversized, short dress is not your style, then consider a more form fitting style in a longer length. Form fitting does not have to be unflattering. You want to look for a dress that has a nice weight to it and skims the body.

This black tie waist sweater dress outfit is a good example of this style. I wish you could feel the fabric of this dress…it has some weight to it and that causes it to drape so nicely on the body. I linked some similar styles since this exact dress is no longer available.

Versatility Of A Sweater Dress Outfit

The best thing about sweater dress outfits is the variety of ways you can style them. Dress them up or down by changing out your choice of shoes and consider layering with different style jackets.

As I mentioned earlier, tall boots and a sweater dress is a great combination and is the epitome of fall/winter fashion.

For a more casual look, pair your sweater dress with sneakers or ballet flats. This tie waist sweater dress is very flattering and comes in several colors. It’s under $40 and looks so cute dressed down with my No Boundaries sneakers from Walmart!

For layering your sweater dress, consider a blazer, puffer vest, or denim jacket.

So when you want to put together a sweater dress outfit, remember to consider the length and style of the dress to suite your body type. Petite women should probably lean more to the shorter styles, and taller women need to be careful not to wear a dress that is too short!

Also change your shoes and outer layers to create a whole different look with the same dress. I hope this post has given you some ideas to implement into your wardrobe.
