Wedding season is upon us, and with it comes the excitement of celebration, love, and the age-old dilemma: what to wear as a guest? Whether you’re attending a lavish black-tie affair or a rustic backyard ceremony, finding the perfect wedding guest dress can be a daunting task.
According to a survey by The Knot, the average guest spends $177 on their wedding attire, making it not only a fashion decision but also a financial one. Since my daughter is getting married in September 2025, I have personally been going through this process, so I’m passing all my tips onto you. This post will guide you through the process of finding your perfect wedding guest dress. From understanding dress codes to choosing the right silhouette and accessorizing, this article will provide you with all the tools you need to look and feel your best at any wedding. Let’s find that dress that will have you standing out for all the right reasons.
Consider The Wedding Theme & Dress Code

The first step to finding your perfect wedding guest dress is to have a clear understanding of the wedding theme and dress code. For example, where is the event? Is this a beach wedding, traditional church ceremony, outdoor wedding, country themed barn, or elegant evening wedding? Also the time of day will help you decide on the formality of your dress. Typically weddings held earlier in the day are less formal than evening weddings.
The Most Common Dress Codes Are:
- Black Tie: floor length gowns, black ties, tuxedos.
- Formal: floor length gowns, tuxedos optional, black suits acceptable.
- Semi-Formal: below the knee dresses, dress shirts, slacks.
- Casual: sundresses, collared shirts, khakis.
If the dress code is not specified on the invitation ask the couple or wedding planner for clarification. If you really don’t know the dress code, it’s best to err on the side of formality with cocktail attire or semi-formal attire.
Think About Comfort & Practicality

Finding your perfect wedding guest dress is about looking amazing, but you also want to be comfortable and practical. If there will be dancing, choose a dress that allows for movement. Choose shoes very carefully. If the wedding is outdoors, avoid certain types of heels that will sink into the ground. Also choose a dress that is appropriate for the weather. The last thing you want is to be freezing or sweating!
Find The Right Fit For Your Body Type
Knowing your body type and working with it instead of against it will save you a lot of frustration. You may have your heart set on a certain style, but if that style does not flatter your body type you will ultimately not be happy with the way you look.

A-line dresses are the most flattering for most body types. Fitted dresses accentuate an hourglass shape. I know many women are not comfortable showing off their arms. There are many style options to help with this such as a lace sleeve.
I have found that as I’m shopping for my mother of the bride dress, the in store selection is not very good. I do, however, recommend starting in a physical store to try on sizes and styles to get a good idea of your size range. This will also help guide you to what styles fit and flatter you the best. Ignore the color and just focus on the fit.
Next, you can go online and order the dresses you want to try in one or two sizes instead of it being a total guess.

Start to familiarize yourself with local options for alterations. Many department stores and bridal shops offer alterations as a free service if you purchase from them.
Wedding Guest Dress Fit Tip:

I didn’t choose this dress, but I did like the fit.
As I’ve been shopping for my mother of the bride dress, I seem to always have the same issue. Because I’m bigger in the chest area, sometimes a dress fits nicely in the waist and it too tight across the bust. If you have this issue, it’s always better to size up and have the dress altered to fit you perfectly. You don’t want to have a dress that is too big or too small in any area.
Consider The Color & Fabric

I think we all know this, but I have to say it. It is generally bad etiquette for anyone except the bride to wear white to a wedding. With so many rigid wedding traditions becoming more obsolete, this is one rule that still stands strong. Some brides are even requesting that their guests wear a certain color, like black.
As the mother of the bride, I am looking at dresses that compliment my daughter’s bridal party dresses. I don’t want to “match” the bridesmaids but I want a cohesive color palette. The time of year will also influence your color choice for you wedding guest dress.
Wedding Guest Dress Shopping Tip:

Many websites offer free fabric swatches for color and texture. Take advantage of this before you order dresses to try from a particular retailer. I’m currently waiting on some swatches right now so I can pick the best color to order some wedding guest dresses to try for myself. MissAcc.com is a good place to look for dresses.

Your wedding guest dress should be tasteful and representative of the over all theme of the wedding you are attending. If you want to wear a color that stands out, that’s okay but keep in mind the bride and groom are the stars of the show.
Fabric of your wedding guest dress largely depends on the wedding venue and the weather. My daughter’s wedding is in September. The venue is very elegant, but we are having the ceremony outside. September in Georgia can still be quite hot, so I have to keep that in mind when considering the fabric and style of my dress.
You will want to choose a fabric that is ultimately as comfortable as possible. A dress that is beautiful, yet makes you uncomfortable, hot, itchy, or has a fussy element will not be a wise choice in the long run.
Let’s Look At Some Examples Of Wedding Guest Dresses

Now that we have discussed all the things to consider, let’s look at some examples of wedding guest dressing according to their level of formality. This After Six Gown is so amazing!
Formal Wedding Guest Dresses
If you are attending a formal wedding, then you are probably needing a full length gown. Remember, it’s better to be slightly over dressed that under dressed, so if you are attending an elegant evening wedding err on the side of a more formal look.

Semi Formal Dresses

Semi Formal dresses include midi and shorter length dresses, but are a step up from what you might wear to church or to the workplace. This includes cocktail dresses and less formal maxi style dresses.
Casual Wedding Guest Dresses
This category is very broad. This could be country outdoor setting, a simple at home ceremony, a church ceremony, or basically any atmosphere that is more casual. That doesn’t mean you should not still choose a dress that shows honor and gratitude towards the bride, groom, family, and friends.

So I hope this helps you in your search for the perfect wedding guest dress. We have discussed several factors to consider and I have linked some dresses for you to consider. Which dress have I chosen for my daughter’s wedding? You will have to wait until after the wedding and then I will share it!
