Every family has that signature dish that just completes the holiday meal. For my family, Thanksgiving is not complete without our traditional holiday sweet potato casserole. My mom made it for years, and then when I got married I carried on the tradition. I still use the handwritten recipe that she gave me in 1997! I don’t know where the recipe originally came from, but we are a nuts and brown sugar topping family…not a marshmallow topping family. So let me share this holiday sweet potato casserole recipe with you, and it might turn out to be your family’s must-have dish.

Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe
The very first time I made this sweet potato casserole was on Thanksgiving when my husband and I were dating. I made a rookie mistake and mixed all the ingredients (including the topping ingredients) together and then baked. I realized later that I was supposed to make the topping separately and then sprinkle it on top…whoops! It still tasted good, but wasn’t in it’s full glory.
To help you avoid this mistake, I listed the topping ingredients separate from the casserole ingredients. Otherwise, it’s a pretty simple recipe.

If I’m too lazy 🤪 or don’t have time can I use canned sweet potatoes?

Kristin…I use almost the same recipe, except I don’t use nutmeg or cinnamon & I do use canned sweet potatoes to save time. I love sweet potato casserole!
