If you are like me, your closet never fully “arrives”. It’s in a constant state of reorganization, cleaning out, and striving to be a Pinterest worthy space yet it never quite gets there. I could blame my closet for being too small, but that’s a lie. The truth is, maintaining closet organization is a skill, and it takes constant effort and discipline to beat the clutter.
Today I want to share 3 hacks to transform your space into a more pleasing, orderly, and functional closet. These 3 simple things have really helped me get my closet under control. We are going to address overcrowded drawers full of leggings, piles of pants falling over, and also I have a solution for shoe organization that will save you a lot of space!
Before we get started, I would love for you to be a regular here at The Scarlet Lily. My email list is free and you will get all new content plus some bonus material sent to your in box.
Drawers Stuffed With Too Many Leggings
We all love our leggings/yoga pants. I would not want to do life without them quite frankly. I have traditional leggings, flared leggings, and everything in between! They used to live in two separate drawers filled to the rim. I really couldn’t even get to the ones on the bottom of the pile…in fact, I could barely open and close the drawers.
It was time to get real and make some hard choices about my leggings and that started with taking every-single-pair out of the drawer and sorting them out. Half of them no longer fit or I didn’t really wear them anymore, so they went in the “no” pile.
Now comes the fun part. These legging hangers are an Amazon purchase from the most recent prime day event. They come in a pack of 2 and each hold 10 pair of leggings! They are incredible space savers because of how they are shaped. Also the arched shape makes them easier to see what is in the back.
Free up that drawer space and hang your leggings instead. I knew I had 10 spaces for regular leggings and 10 spaces for flared leggings and no more. I filled my hangers and if I buy any additional leggings, something has to go. Honestly, do we really need more than 20 pair of leggings?
Closet Organization: Save Space With Pants Hangers
Most of us probably hang our pants on hangers, but jeans may be a different situation. I used to fold mine and then the piles would start to topple over or I would forget what I actually had. When we have stacks of items, we tend to only wear the ones on the top of the pile.
I discovered these pants hangers a long time ago, and they have really been a closet organization must-have for pants and jeans. They come in four colors and each hold 5 pair of pants. Then the hanger collapses down to save space in your closet.
You can determine how many you need and use the same method as with the leggings as to how many you keep. I like to have one for dress pants and one for denim.
Try on each and every pair and make sure they fit you at the size you are now…if not donate or store them away. Having only the pieces in your closet that you actually wear makes putting an outfit together so much easier.
Closet Organization: Get Control Of Shoes
Whether you have a built in closet system, a portable shoe rack, or shelves closet real estate is precious. The best way I have found to maximize space is to use these shoe stackers. You get a set of 20 and it will literally double your storage space!
They are adjustable for heel height and they are very lightweight. Again, this is another system that forces you to limit the number you keep. Also I recommend changing out your closet for spring/summer and fall/winter shoes.
For items like slippers, slides, and dog walking shoes I like to keep a large basket in my closet to keep these items all in one place. They don’t necessarily need to have a place on the shelf or shoe rack.
Getting your closet neat and organized is an ongoing project, but closet organization is so satisfying! Not only will you enjoy being in this space, but having your closet in order will make putting outfits together much easier.
