My husband and I are officially empty nesters now that our daughter got married a couple of weeks ago. Yes, she was away at college for a time, but this time is different. She moved into her new home with her husband and that left two empty bedrooms in our home. One bedroom will become a guest room, and the other bedroom is the subject of today’s post. Perhaps you have been struggling to find a practical way to use a spare bedroom? Here is my spare bedroom makeover into a peaceful retreat.

Decide What The Purpose Of The Space Will Be
When you have an extra bedroom, the first thing to do is to really step back and think about how you would want to use that space. Maybe you have young grandchildren and you want to create a place for them to play or stay overnight? Maybe you want a room for your pets? I’ve often thought a dog room would be so cute, but my dogs want to be where I am so they probably wouldn’t use it. Other ideas could be a home office, media room, craft room, and the possibilities are endless! The point is to make it specifically for your needs.
For me, I knew that I wanted my spare bedroom makeover to serve two purposes. First, a quiet space to do my daily bible study. Having a designated space to read, reflect, journal, and pray helps me look forward to this time and avoid distractions.

Secondly, I wanted a place to exercise. Nothing elaborate, just a calm space for pilates and a place for my rebounder (mini trampoline). I recently got this to help maintain bone density, but I didn’t have a good place to keep it.

Decorate The Space
Once you know the purpose your spare bedroom makeover, it can now be transformed into whatever you want it to be. Decorate the space in your personal taste with things that bring you joy. I’m happy to say that I did not have to buy a single thing for my new space! Often if you have an open mind, you can find things that you already have and repurpose them in a new space. I do this all the time.

The two bookcases have been with me for years, and they were currently being stored in the attic. Out they came to fill the largest wall space in this room. All the accessories were things that I already had from years past.

My daughter was using this room as her home office before, so there were some wall hangers left in place. I just shopped my basement for these sconces and they fit the vibe perfectly and the nails were already in place.
My favorite little piece in this room is the fountain. It came from Amazon, and I stole it from my husband’s home office since he really doesn’t use it. It is so soothing and the natural elements were exactly what I envisioned. Soft candle light, the sound of water, and the understated calming scent from my essential oil diffuser.

I also wanted just a hint of seasonal decor since fall is my favorite season of the year. The fall branches along with lots of green plants add to the charm and serenity.
Reading & Study Nook

This chair is part of a set that has been moved around a lot as well. They were in our upstairs hallway area, but it was a bit crowded so I moved one of them into here. A side table for my coffee, a lamp, and my notepad was just enough.

The bookshelf is the perfect space to store my spiral bound journaling bible set. This was a gift from my husband last Christmas and I love having them here right at arms reach. This is a great way to make notes in the margin of your bible and the spiral bound construction makes it so easy to use. I also purchased some pretty pens and highlighters that do not bleed through the pages…perfect for making notes in your bible.

Of course my relaxation is only enhanced by the fur babies!

Relaxing In Comfort
I always encourage women to get dressed every day, fix your hair, and do your skincare. That can mean a lot of different things to different people. For me, that means having cozy clothes that make me feel good. I don’t wear nice things to impress anyone…many days I don’t leave the house. I do it because it makes me mentally feel better.

I wanted to share this piece that I recently got from Amazon. It’s a wrap with sleeves. Even during the summer, my arms get cold in the air conditioning. This piece is perfect for any time that you need a little something to cover up with, and it folds up small for travel. My new cozy slippers can be found here.
Resetting Your Mind & Body With Movement
Another function of my spare bedroom transformation was for healthy movement. I’ve never enjoyed going to the gym or rigorous workouts, and I’m okay with that. I used to feel “less than” because I didn’t enjoy these types of exercise but I have let go of that negative emotion and embraced the activities that bring me joy.

Walks in nature with my dogs are healthy for my mind and body. I’m fortunate to have a nature trail behind my house and deer watching is a passion of mine.
I also love to play pickleball, and I do that on a regular basis. I really felt the need this past year after losing quite a bit of weight to focus on my muscle and bone health.

Pilates has began to fill in that gap for me. I have started slow and I honestly enjoy it! I truly feel better and I want to keep my body moving and healthy. I really like Jessica Valant for Pilates on YouTube. Here is the link for her channel.

For pilates, I am enjoying these tops with open backs. I also play pickleball in them. They are light and comfortable, and let the air circulate. I have both the long sleeve and short sleeve versions in several colors. You will want to wear a sports bra or bralette underneath.

I found these cute socks on Amazon for pilates, but you could wear them for other things. They fit like a ballet slipper and have grippies on the bottom.

The rebounder is a new addition and I enjoy it for softer impact exercise that helps maintain bone density. I haven’t bounced myself into the ceiling or had any mishaps yet!

What I’m also loving about this room is the access to the television on the wall. I play soothing YouTube scenes during the day and I also do all my exercises with free videos.
